What Is This

Qué Es Esto

A gentle inquiry into what you are beneath thoughts and senses, resting in the quiet awareness that is always present.

What Is This

Notice any discomfort or restlessness.

Take a look right now in your experience.
What is your sense of reality?
What is this?

Similar to the question, who am I, but broader,
what is this?

Notice the answer might appear that was as what seems obvious:
this is the world, me in my home, in my country, on this planet.
Notice that this is thoughts.

And the answer be known, not through thoughts.
What is this?

Letting the answer come

Slowly, as you ask, can you answer as the answers come.
Notice when the answer is in the form of thoughts.
And so, what is this?

A thought cannot be the answer.
A thought is just a thought.

Can you taste the answer?
Can you sense the answer?
Can you feel the answer?
And can you know it without the senses?

Reality, presence, is prior to the senses, prior to thoughts,
and it can be known.

Before the person

Who am I?
What am I?
What is this?

Before there was a person.
Before there was thinking, what am I?

You might taste it.
Something might be known as a gap, emptiness, a spaciousness, a silence.

Every taste of this might leave you wanting more.
The taste of what you're looking for.

Reality tasting reality.
Silence hearing itself.

Silence and sound

A silence now related to sounds.
When sounds appear, this silence remains.
What is this?

Just a gentle, open attention,
no need to focus, no need to strain.

Just curious, open, almost as if in waiting,
waiting to notice the next thought.

There is no rush, no urgency,
there is infinite time.

Always here

When this is tasted, we interpret it as an experience,
something to go back to.

Looking for it in thoughts and memories,
looking for this in time,
but it is always here.

Before there are thoughts about the world,
before there are thoughts about yourself,
there is reality.

Reality is always at peace,
it's always empty,
it's always spacious.

Not two

In reality, there are not two.
Everything appears and is known within and by one reality.

The knower and the known are not two,
no boundaries separates them.
The known is knowing itself.

Moving toward the unknown

Notice it may seem as if you are sinking,
moving away from the focus and thoughts,
a different form of knowing.

For the mind it is moving towards not knowing,
the uncertain, the unknown, the un-knowable,
for what we are that is closer and closer.

The self-knowing, reality knowing itself directly,
not through thoughts, not through sensations,
not through sounds and sight,
not through memory,
directly here, directly now,
closer than any distance.
Zero distance.

Slowly noticing everything, feelings, sensations.
