Waves and the Ocean

Las olas y el océano

Rest in the awareness that holds every thought and feeling, discovering that you are the whole ocean, not just its passing waves.

Waves and the Ocean

Notice the sense of expectation,
expectation of something, waiting for something.

It might feel like I am waiting for something,
or I am wanting for something.
I am here for something to happen,
something to change.

And rather than taking this position of I am wanting something to change,
just notice that it is a position.

That which wants, that which is expecting, hoping,
is not what you really are.
That which wants, that which is expecting,
is appearing,
is known like a wave in the ocean.

Whatever it is,
a kind of restlessness,
an anxious sense of something's not right,
something's missing,
something could be better.

See if any of these words resonate.

Just notice that all of that part of experience is appearing,
the sense of something that could be different, the desire,
the longing,
the expectation,
the wanting,
the need,
even if very subtle.

And the one that wants, the one that needs,
is also just appearing like a subtle wave on an ocean.

Many waves, one ocean

This ocean has many waves and many depths.
There's the waves of sounds,
the waves of sensations,
the waves of many thoughts,
the waves of all perception.

Color, sight, smell,
it's all one ocean,
many waves, flavors,
shapes,
all moving like the waves of an ocean.

Including this sense of something missing,
the one who wants,
who longs for,
who needs change,
something to happen,
even the restlessness,
the discomfort,
any worry,
fear,
pain,
all of it just waves.

A constantly moving ocean.

There's just a way to see the ocean
where it has no center,
no part of it that is more important.

Worry is not more important than the sounds.
Just a different flavor and possibly a larger wave,
but all large waves rise and fall on their own.

Everything you experience,
all of it, a hundred percent, is waves,
all thoughts, memories,
worries,
pains,
future.

The knowingness

And this great infinite ocean,
the never-ending movement,
the never-ending creativity.

There is a knowingness, simple,
empty,
fundamental.

This knowingness is not separate from the ocean,
separate from the waves.
It is like the depth of the ocean,
quiet,
quiet, silent.

Calm, still depth of the ocean,
timeless,
just knowing the movement of the waves.

The depth of the ocean means nothing.
The needs are waves that are known,
seen,
tasted as they come,
as they go.

This is not abstract,
it's right now, a metaphor for this timeless infinite moment.

All that is seen,
all that appears,
all that is.
Sounds, sights, sensations,
thoughts,
a sense of being a person,
a human being with a beginning and an end.

There's one big wave in this ocean,
a beautiful wave.

The essence of what you are right now is the knowing of this,
the knowing of the human experience.
The knowing of time,
the knowing of movement,
of change,
completely boundless, completely free.

Nothing to do

To this knowingness, there are no things to do, nowhere to arrive at.
It is what knows the doing of things.

At the depth of the ocean there are no actions and choices.
There is just the knowing of the actions and choices happening at the surface, in the waves.

Seeing, knowing,
loving,
only loving,
magical colors and shapes and forms at the surface and the waves,
always free.
Never not free,
always here,
never not this.

As a child,
all worries, fears,
pains, joys.
Known by the same emptiness that is knowing this right now.

All those pains,
fears,
joys leave no mark
to this knowingness.
The ocean is untroubled by the waves.

The illusion of the wave

We believe we are the wave and only a wave.
The illusion begins and the struggle begins.
The powerlessness of attempting to control the ocean and the waves.

The wave is not free,
it is the ocean that is the freedom.

Awareness can be called silence,
emptiness,
peace beyond the mind,
beyond the comprehension of thoughts.

The waves cannot know the depth of the ocean.
The mind cannot know the silence,
this silence that knows the mind.

The mind is loud when the waves are strong.
The fears and pains are flowing,
rising.
This knowingness, this silence, is untouched.

Nothing needs to change

When you find yourself immersed in the experience of some waves,
the sense of being caught in the rising and the falling,
pushed and pulled,
just notice nothing needs to change.

Since the ocean depth,
the knowingness, is still already here.

Even in the surface,
the waves are just water.
For the water,
there is no danger.

There is no arriving.
Achieving, meeting,
is just the shape of a wave, it comes like hunger and goes,
comes like thirst and goes,
comes like an image of past and the future and goes.

Once we've tasted the depth of the ocean,
we don't need to remain there.
We can recognize that for the water of the ocean there is no difference between the depth and the surface.

Hence what we are is not the wave,
it's the water,
free to move,
free to love,
to be,
free.
Free to take all shapes and taste all forms.

Letting thoughts move

No need to calm the mind,
no need for anything to change.

When the attention is absorbed in thoughts,
no need to pull away.
Just notice the water-like nature of thoughts.
Moving,
coming,
going.

The most captivating thoughts,
the most intense sensations,
emotions,
feelings.
No need to control or stop change.
Just notice as it's happening.

Its true nature is the water,
the movement that changes,
the coming, the going.

One wave disappears,
turns into the next.
No beginning, no end.
Just the movements on the surface.
