Relationship and Awakening

Relación y despertar

A student reflects on how intimate relationship and awakening have been woven together on her path: how a partner reveals what she avoids in herself, and how being met in her darkest places became a gift she now sees offered to others.

Relationship and Awakening

A student reflects on how intimate relationship and awakening have been woven together on her path: how a partner reveals what she avoids in herself, and how being met in her darkest places became a gift she now sees offered to others.

How is that for you, with respect to what I'm saying about the mix of relationship and awakening in a group setting? Is it an interest for you?

You mean, is it where the rubber hits the road? What am I interested in? I'm not sure exactly what you're asking, but it's a very important part of it for me. If I look at my path, I really came to someone who became central to it through you, and with you. Our whole journey of awakening has been together, but hopefully not too close.

I don't think I'm the pure jnana type. The bhakti path and the intimacy are very important to me. I don't know how to say it, but they're indivisible from who and how I am. We worked so closely with one teacher for so many years. Even your awakening process was very much like that. It's a balance, right?

Beautiful. Thanks for sharing. If there are any questions, feel free to jump in about anything.

Relationship as a mirror

I think a big part of it is that the relationship shows me when I have to go into myself. I'm avoiding something in myself and making his life difficult, and that always echoes back. My making his life difficult shows me there's something in me I need to look at. That's the best way, or in a way the easiest way, to know what I might be avoiding in myself, because I'm trying to get you to carry it.

At the same time, there are moments in the relationship that are different. When you were very sick, I wanted to be totally in service to you getting well.

Walking into hell with someone

Maybe it's because of the type of path we were on, but I used to say to him, "You came into hell to find me and take my hand." And you know that you did. It was so beautiful.

It was joyful. It was like battling with demons.

And someone else too: he was so willing to walk next to them, as if to say, "If you're in hell, I'll come in with you." That is just so beautiful. Wow, I didn't think I would cry.

Vulnerable sharing in real time, right here. So beautiful.

Being met without being rejected

I also think you've done that for a lot of people. It's so easy to pull away from your own pain or your own demons. Then there's someone there who says, "I know that demon. I'm not afraid of it. I've been there myself, and I'm not pushing you away or rejecting you." And still there are limits; they're still going to be honest with you. That is just so beautiful.
