Being Seen

Ser Visto

A conversation about the experience of being seen by everything, and how fear and projection shape whether that seeing feels terrifying or empty.

Being Seen

A conversation about the experience of being seen by everything, and how fear and projection shape whether that seeing feels terrifying or empty.

It seems like what you describe is what in Eastern traditions is called Satchitananda.

Yes, exactly. It was the recognition of Satchitananda, and everything that was solid disappeared. Nothing was solid any longer. Everything that was inside and outside was no longer inside and outside, yet there was still the knowing that there is a person here and another there, and I could speak to her. But it was no longer "I am this and she is that," or "I am here and the wall is there." That stopped.

And then we both knew, do you remember this? We both knew who it was. Specifically, both of us knew.

The terror of being seen

I don't know if I'm imagining things, but that really resonates with something that happened to me a while ago. I always attributed it to a pretty deep paranoia, but what you just said touches on it. When you said everything is seeing you, literally everything, it was terrifying. I felt like I couldn't move. Every movement felt so significant, totally significant. The responsibility was huge, but with that came the huge terror and the paranoia. I had no idea what was going on. I just thought I was losing my mind. It was never really surrendered into, so it eventually mellowed out. I thought, that's just really bad paranoia, that's what people get. But I'm curious.

It sounds like paranoia.

Wouldn't it be that what you think is looking at you has an interpretation to it? That seeing is so empty in itself, but if you are projecting your fears or your anger, then it looks back at you in a negative way. It takes on that quality.

Decades of approach

Let me say a few things. What I'm describing, I had come up to for decades. It wasn't the only time. It was something I started to encounter as a teenager, and it was recurrent. Every time it was more intense, more clear, more direct, but still unbearable, and I still had the ability to pull away.

I described that to my teacher, and he said, "If you're lucky, in twenty years you won't be able to stop it." He literally said twenty years, and it was pretty much to the day that it happened. He said, "If you're lucky, at one point you won't be able to stop it. And then you'll become enlightened." He called it that as well.

Projection and paranoia

What you're bringing up, I want to highlight, because there is a dance there. Consider the paranoia. There is a projection. Paranoia is a type of fear, and it can be projected onto something.

If you project something that would scare you if it were seen, that is the mechanism. If I project hatred, then I think somebody out there is hating me, and that makes me feel scared. So paranoia could be that hatred or anger. Or it could even be something like somebody being really interested in me, tracking me, following me, and that could be your own deep curiosity and interest turned around.

But it wasn't interpersonal. I didn't feel that. It felt like wherever I was, I was just being seen.

What he was describing was so empty that it didn't have this lace of paranoia to it, but it was still terrifying to be seen.

It was terrifying because I didn't want to be seen. There was something I was trying to hide, and that seeing was coming closer, seeing more and more. I could not hide from it.

Readiness and the mirror

By contrast, when I was really new on the path, we went to a retreat center for a dynamic meditation. The first time I did this meditation, I saw an eye looking at me, and it was like the eye of Sauron. It was terrifying. I think that was just because I wasn't ready. I was projecting my own shadow, my own unconscious material. But that seeing might have been very much like what you saw. I simply wasn't ready.

Yes, this is where I was going. Look at this as something that will probably recur in different forms and flavors. The more you see your own mind and your fears, the more you clear the illusions. Then, when you encounter what we might call pure consciousness, it is like a mirror. You are seeing the activation of your own mind.
