The World Seeing Back

El Mundo que Mira de Vuelta

The World Seeing Back

A teacher recounts a night of radical shift, when the sense of a separate self looking out at the world dissolved into a single seeing, and a student describes feeling that same current from beside him.

When you say Christianity, you mean Christian mysticism, right?

Yes, the living contemplative branch of Christianity, Christian mysticism. I recently discovered Meister Eckhart. I was describing some aspects of my experience to an AI, and it said, "This is what Meister Eckhart described, and in the very same way."

Can you remember what it was?

It came up in an interview when I was describing a night that held a big shift. I was describing it in a very particular way, and the interviewer was surprised. She said something like, "That's very beautiful." To me it was simply how it happened.

A world that looks back

Very simply summarized: in that moment, in this particular shift, there was the sense of "I" looking, "I" seeing, "I" perceiving directionally out toward the world, toward the universe. Everything outside of me, I was observing and seeing. Normally that which is outside of me is just the world I'm seeing. But in this moment, it was as if everything outside of me began to have an energy and a presence so vast, so intense, that all I could know it as was divinity, God. It was as if the whole world was God looking back at me. It was a very real experience of a presence looking at me.

I was on the floor, on my knees, crying, in embarrassment and shame and terror. Catherine was with me. As this looking came closer (and I'll skip the complexity, because a lot happened, very subtle), there was a seeing that was seeing me. The seeing and the being seen were coming closer together. The seeing just kept coming, and I couldn't stop it. It was seeing more and more and more. That which I was looking at was seeing me, seeing me more than I wanted to be seen. It was seeing everything I was, completely, in every way. I didn't want that. So there was a kind of battle, and that's why I was in shame and pain and terror.

The two become one seeing

In the moment when the seeing that was seeing me, and my seeing of that seeing, came so close, it almost felt like a substance, two energies pressing together. Then there was a moment when it touched. In that instant, the seeing became one seeing, or as if there was no seer and no seen. Everything was just seeing. There was a complete shift. That which I had been seeing disappeared, and there was a current of bliss, a torrent of bliss.

So this description, divinity seeing me and I seeing it, touching and becoming one seeing, is an exact description from Meister Eckhart. I discovered it about a week ago, and I'm still looking for exactly where it is.

And we both knew it was Christ consciousness.

We both knew. Catherine was with me, and she felt that shift, where I was before and after. She was next to me and felt it.

What do you mean?

You felt it, that current of bliss, going through both of us.

I felt it as if I was walking along and then walked underneath a massive waterfall. It wasn't, "Oh, I feel it." It was something else entirely.

The one beside him

I was begging Catherine for help. I was desperate.

You always say it that way, that you were begging for my help, but it sounds like I was withholding it.

No, you were there. You were helpful. There isn't much anyone can do, but your presence and your love were very supportive.

But you were desperate. That's true.

I was terrified. My feeling was, "I'm dying. I'm going to die here. This is going to kill me."

And it wasn't going to be a painless death.

It was excruciatingly painful. "I'm dying. I'm going to die from this." And then I disappeared. I saw that everything I thought I was, wasn't.

I've probably told this story a bunch of times. After being at his side for a long time, I thought, "Okay, he seems okay, I can go to the bathroom." I went, and I was there for roughly a thousand years. Then I came out, and he was lying on the floor with a photo of Roberto. That's when I hit the wall. I walked up to him, and it was the waterfall. That was crazy. Then we were just lying there, bliss going up and down at the same time. And then you stopped, looked at me, and asked, "Are you able to stop this if you want to?"

I wanted to make sure you were okay.

I thought I was in your power. I said, "Yes, I could, but why would I ever do that? Nobody would make that choice." And you said, "Okay, you're not in my power then. Carry on."
